Have you noticed that some houses continue to have their Christmas lights up, either encircling the pillars, or icicle light handing down from their porches? It’s July! Why can’t the HOA do anything about this? I thought there was a rule that said the lights had to be gone after a certain amount of time post-holiday. At least one of these houses has had the lights up for years? It’s ridiculous!

Our HOA doesn't enforce the rules as far as maintaining nice lawns is concerned, so don't count on them doing anything about Christmas lights.

the HOA only "acts" on complaints.  So if you report it - they will go out to that house and "verify" and then send them a letter to comply with xyz section of the convents (which I think states within 2 weeks after the holiday the items must be removed)

All the HOA does is send out letters when notified of violations (sometimes they don't even do that, as they are understaffed). Homeowners either take heed of the violations, or temporarily do, or simply ignore them.

The HOA has no mechanism for fining chronic violators (i.e., there's hardly any incentive to comply with the rules).

Seems like a very anemic system – at best. (IMO)

It's so frustrating for all of the rest of us who follow the rules. The lights, the lawn ornaments and that one house who thinks having a jungle for a front yard get on my nerves.

Agreed; I wish the HOA patrolled the neighborhoods, looking for viaolations so that those of us that follow the rules don't have to deal with notifying them. It wouldn't be that hard to identify the real chronic violators, and check on them with greater frequency. There should be some sort of way to fine/sanction those who refuse to comply.

Every time I drive to the Potomac Club, I see trash toters left out by the dozens. If the HOA (who's offices are in the Potomac Club) can't get a grip on the sea of green/blue toters left out all week, I don't see them controlling it elsewhere. Unfortunately...

I had a "statue" in my front yard & I got a violation letter from the HOA (It seems a neighbor complained - it offended them) OK  so I moved it to the rear -- but what about those with large lions, fountians, etc

And yes that house on Riverpoint who has a jungle in the front -- that should not be allowed - but from what I heard, it's part of their "religion" so the jungle owners claimed that they have to keep it -- and the HOA cowarded and picked on homeowners like me who comply when told

I am OK with following the rules -- but everyone must follow them too, and this requires action from the HOA or the 2 little ladies that main the front desk at the potomac club to do the paperwork.

I was in Broadlands last night for dinner and it's clear their HOA is very lax'd --- wow their yards are all over the board.  I fear that over time that is what Lansdowne will look like.

the HOA fee go towards enforcing the covenants and rules?  Why are in an HOA community, if the HOA not enforcing the rules?  Isn't the HOA supposed to be protecting our property values?

I don't know if I understand your viewpoint ... You seem aggravated that you got a violation letter, but at the same time fear Lansdowne turning chaotic like Broadlands (due the lax HOA stance).

I agree that everybody should comply, regardless of excuses of any kind (including religion). The only way they are going to get near total compliance is to levy fines that will be liened on a homeowners property if they refuse to pay.

Anything short of that and the violation letters are just a suggestion or a nuisance.

I wonder if if would help if the letter stated that the complaints came from neighbors and how many neighbors have complained. For instance, if they sent a new letter out and said, since our original message to you regarding your violation, we have received 10 additional calls/notifications from your neighbors complaining that you have failed to remove your holiday lights for 18 months. Shame them a bit. I have half a mind to go to one of the houses in the middle of the night and remove the lights myself. It just looks trashy.
