Your LL.com publisher, as a parent, is an advocate for an intelligently designed and executed HS campus.
We are encouraging a dialogue among proponents and opponents and will continue to publish both categories.
If opponents wish to start a petition we will publish it.
Thanks for being a member and engaging in the arena of ideas!
I would remove the word "support" from the petition. I am interested in speaking with the school board on a location for the next high school. But don't feel the NCC is the right place.

Permalink Reply by Eric Saraceno on January 5, 2011 at 9:31pm I can't support HS-8 on the NCC site until the increased traffic volume and safety concerns are addressed; specifically for those homeowners living near the areas immediately impacted; including but not limited to: Upper Belmont and Riverpoint Drive, Riverpoint Drive West of Upper Belmont through to Kipheart and all the side streets in between.
As a reminder, the proposed athletic fields, football stadium and associated parking will be located on Kipheart where the Lansdowne Sports Park is now. I think LCPS is under-estimating the number of students and adults (both home fans and away) throughout the year who will drive & park as close to the fields instead of the 1/2 mile proposed walk from the school.
According to Loudoun Sheriffs' office's own data, there have been over 420 vehicle-related incidents over the last 3 years within the radius of the cross streets mentioned above. This data is divided into 3 categories: Crashes, Citations and Warnings. The data shows that while total overall numbers have decreased slightly over time, crashes are up, warnings are way up, yet actual tickets being written are way down. I found that surprising and somewhat concerning. Not surprisingly, the 3 top hot spots are: Upper Belmont & Riverpoint Drive, Riverpoint Drive and Kipheart and Riverside and Kipheart.
I don't see how adding a 1,600 student school + a few hundred employees will not add to the traffic problem without a comprehensive traffic solution. Moreover, it's estimated that half or so (600-800 students) will come from outside our community. They will be bus-ed in and/or dropped off from parents adding to more traffic.
We have children and understand why conceptually HS-8 on the NCC site is attractive - but there are too many un-answered questions at this time.
Regardless of how you feel about the NCC site, all Lansdowne residents should pay attention to whether or not the BoS finds an HS-8 site this spring. If a site for a northern Ashburn high school is not purchased, it is extremely likely that money will flow south. When the new middle school opens without an HS-8 in the works, Belmont Ridge will likely house all of the folks in the area who will not have a designated high school. Maybe we can successfully fight to stay at Tuscarora, pushing others out, but who wants that fight again?
Please, even if you are not a parent but a neighbor who is engaged b/c of the proximity, please stay informed and involved.
