Is there a Seldens Landing Teacher CRISIS?

  • Rating: No Rating

Apparently there are over 20 Teachers that have resigned from Selden's Landing at the end of this school year.

Some in the community have opined that perhaps there is a systemic issue with Mgmt/Labor relations at the Selden's Landing school.

Is there an ADMIN/Teacher crisis at Selden's.

How can we verify this "fact" of total resigning teachers?

We assume that if 20 is correct, it's statistically outside the NORM and perhaps there is a reason?

What have you heard about this issue members?

My understanding is that the vast majority of the teachers cannot stand Mrs. Stephens. I have heard numerous complaints directly from several different teachers at Seldens that Mrs. Stephens is completely unsupportive of the teachers, and is full of criticism over the tiniest, most unimportant things while completely ignoring the positives.

I heard rumblings last year that the transition in Principals was hard on the teachers, as Ms Brownell was so well liked, and Ms Stevens is more of an "administrator".....while from a parent perspetive, I can tell Ms Stevens runs a "tight ship" but I think that is a "sign of the times" and if these "20" or so treachers resign to go to other schools, I would expect other ES to have the same administration style.  Also, I've heard from the teachers, that they can't "do their own teaching anymore" as it's all standardized and Ms Stevens holds them to it -- once again, as a parent, I like knowing that each grade, no matter the teacher, gets the same instruction.    If 20 have resigned, that worries me, as it means new teachers (many right out of school) so it effects the learning our kids get - becasue standard instruction is one thing, experience is another - and a child needs both.

It looks like there are around 60 teachers there of all types..

20 sounds like an exaggeration.  What is the source?

It would be a crisis if a third of staff left.

I work with someone who has a close relative that teaches as Selden's Landing. I hadn't heard about this mass exodus of Teachers, but she told me that there are already 15 confirmed leaving with an additional 12 looking for positions.

I have heard the same thing that a lot of teachers aren't happy with the environment fostered by Mrs Stephens and that the parent volunteers don't feel appreciated or welcomed by her and her staff.

I had heard of one teacher that was thinking about leaving because she didn't like the principal but I don't know if she actually resigned. Is there any way to confirm this? That's very concerning if it is true.

johnf  - the source is pure rumor for us - neighborhood scuttlebutt

presumably some teachers have mentioned it to some parents... unknown exactly

Confirmed!  As someone who is closer to this than you can imagine I have this to say... If you are being held to a higher standard in your job and you don't like it then you should leave. If you are stuck in a rut and don't really teach "well"  then you should move on.  Many of the teachers that are leaving were unhappy and bringing the entire school down.  Some that are leaving are leaving for other personal reasons and are quite sad about it.  Have faith in the two thirds of teachers that are staying and start backing up Mrs. Stephens.  Bad sentiments travel way faster than good ones- start asking what's good in the elementary instead of what's wrong.

Couldn't agree more with wow! The focus should be on the students. We can only hold them to high expectations if we are expecting high achievement. If we hold our students to high expectations then shouldnt our staff be held to high expectations as well. Mrs Stepens does just that with much support from her staff! As with ANY proffession experiencing the new will only allow for growth! Those that are moving on are doing so on their own accord. Those that come will come with many different backgrounds will enhance our learning community! The negative thoughts and talk is what continue to drive the best of the best  away!
I am glad to see some truths about this quite honestly. I am quite close to this situation as well and there by no means are 20 grade level teachers leaving or resigning as it states in this article. Get the facts right. Most of these teachers, are either assistants or otherwise, and are choosing to leave to pursue other careers or transferring to another school that may be closer to home for them. This is the fastest way that rumors and negative feelings are spread around and it would be nice to see more support for your child's principal in your neighborhood school than this. Yes, some unhappy teachers are leaving due to other job opportunities that have come up and let me be the one to set the record straight, it will be a much more pleasant place to work next year because of it. I wish the speculation would stop and the facts would be listed. The majority of the staff love their job and their boss. Can't let a few bad apples spoil the bunch. You have a principal and staff who do nothing but put the needs of children first. Since when is that a crime? Isn't that what we want for our kids?? Out with the old and in with the better attitudes!! Go SLES and the Administration!!
Sincerely,
