No more of this mamby pamby load about the horrible dangers of High School drivers. Let's get the High School here and be done with Ashburn's belly aching about moving south.

Permalink Reply by Duke Nukem on May 10, 2011 at 6:13pm In a place where my oldest will get kicked out of Tuscarora, and my youngest will probably end up on Stonebridge, then get kicked out again. My unexpert view is that if you have screaming deamons pealing through your "cut road", you probably know them as they'll be coming out of River Oaks. I feel your pain when it comes to junior drivers. I have a valid concern because my inexperianced high school driver may hurt or kill someone, or cause some property damage; not to mention hurting himself. So, I plan to train him in proper driving and help him buy a reasonable car, and re-enforce his good habits with rewards and punishment. That's called "parenting" and is allowed in the Constitution.
Now for my tirade: Too many parents just hand over a fancy fast car to their kids to please them and be "the best parents ever." They do this without proper training, development of good riving habits, or just being really good parents and being hard about the dangers of unsafe driving etc. But that goes part and parcel in some parents inability to recognize flaws in their little angels, or do anything about their spolied behavior. As a result, these kids will make it a habit to race on yours and my street, drive erratically, or just due to inexpereince, desperately attempt to make it to the end of the road without going through any houses. Parents need to be way more involved in getting their kids ready for the road. It's a dangerous place out there, with little room for fooling around. To me, a car is more dangerous than a handgun.
That being said, that's a parenting problem, not the School Boards, or Board of Supervisors issue. If driving is a problem, push to not allow general parking: allow it only for those students that really need it becuase thay have late practice, early band etc. An 18 year old can still ride the bus; just because Daddy can buy a car doesn't make it a good decision to do so. Inexpereinced drivers should not be a reason to solve one of the biggest problems facing our community. And yes, this IS more important than Open Band.

Dear Loudoun County Board members:
I plan to take all of these questions to the June 7 meeting and I would appreciate your input in advance so that these major issues can be fully addressed. The link below is your plan for the NCC site that was distributed prior to the December 21, 2010 public meeting. I think you all need to take a new look at this plan. There are major concerns, listed below, that do not favor this plan over other viable sites, specifically the Lexington 7 site.
http://cmsweb1.lcps.org/509759161361/lib/509759161361/Revised_NCC_P...
For the NCC site, we would be purchasing 41 acres but only 28 of them
are actually developable. The Lexington 7 site is 76 acres all of
which are developable. Please defend your decision to essentially ignore the cost per buildable acre differential.
Aside from the difference in cost per acre of buildable land, the BoS
is not addressing the additional costs of building on on the NCC site
vs. the Lexington 7 site as follows:
1) Special foundation needed for the school due to geotechnical issues
with the property.
2) Underground water facilities needed to manage stormwater.
AND, future maintenance costs of underground stormwater management.
3) Cost of building parking garage. (What types of illicit activities
will likely go on in this garage?)
4) Cost of maintaining parking garage vs. cost of busing. Lori Waters
made the busing cost a point in her favorable analysis of the NCC, but
there are other ongoing future costs that would negate that.
5) Road improvements estimated in this plan at $1.9M exclusive of all
of the improvements (widening turn lanes, etc.) that are mentioned in
the traffic study. What is the true number?
6) Right of way acquisition costs and the associated cost to relocate
utilities currently in the right of way.
7) Cost to do major relocations of BRMS utilities.
8) Economic impact of losing BRMS land/fields and public ball fields.
(Where will those teams play and will they have to pay to play?)
Please tell us what the additional costs are associaited with all of the above issues and defend your decision to proceed with negotiations for the NCC site vs. what appears to me to be a much more economically and strategically sound option. I understand the School Board didn't get full funding per their request and I wonder how we can afford to squander a single dollar. I believe that, contrary to Lori Water's statement that the NCC site is less expensive, when all is said and done, it is actually much more costly
I am also concerned about the Lansdowne walking children who will be placed in harms way by having so many inexperienced high school age drivers on the
adjacent roadways. This group of drivers is notoriously distracted
and that could result in pedestrians being struck.
I look forward to hearing the rational for proceeding with the NCC site.
Thank you for your service to our residents and your consideration in responding to my concerns.
Sincerely,
Robin Crabtree
