We don't want to be alarmist but we've had a couple of nuggets of information come across our email recently that we thought we should share..

Bottom Line - We have to continue to be vigiliant in protecting our neighborhood and our families ALWAYS.

Item 1:  Recently, there have been incidents reported to LCSO and verified where unknown persons in vehicles have stopped at Lansdowne houses and walked to the front of the house (porches etc) and STOLEN shipped packages that were left by FEDEX, UPS and the like...

Item 2: This item related to abduction attempt in Leesburg2Day -

Pickup Truck driveby attempted abduction

Apparently in Ashburn last week, an older model white pick-up truck stopped near a diveway and solicited an 8 year old to get into the truck.   The child ran inside and told his parents.

Some reminders from the LCSO Neighborhood Watch officers:

1. NOTHING is every too small an item to report if you feel that it's "out of the ordinary" in and around our neighborhood.

 - Many of us feel like we don't want to "bother" the Sheriff's because they're busy "fighting real crime"

 - WE have been reminded that NOTHING is too small, and many times Sheriff's are cruising on normal everyday routes and could be vectored quickly to "take a look".    They remind us that they WANT TO DO THAT TYPE OF WORK.

2.  When it comes to child safety we are reminded that we should teach our kids that no matter how "NICE" someone seems to be - if they are an unknown person - ALWAYS run to tell a parent or caregiver.   Also, even if it is someone the child KNOWS, if it's not planned or out of the ordinary, the child should run to the parent/caregiver to tell them about the incident and double check to be sure everything's ok.

3.  In an emergency situation dial - 911 to report that you need immediate assistance.

I know someone who lives on the street where this happened in Ashburn. It really happened!!

Be sure to mark your calendars for "Safety Day at Lansdowne" sunday, April 15th. The event held, ath the Lansdowne fire station, 22. will have great health and safety activities, as well as the Loudoun County Sherrif's office "Kids ID" program. Come on out and meet the Fire fighters and EMT's that provide emergency service to your community!

  Watch for more information

Thanks for posting this, I was just looking for the non-emergency number.

Last night, I forgot to lock my car.  While it was in my drive way, during the night, someone went in (while smoking) and went thru the console and glove box.  The only thing taken was loose change from both areas.

I just want everyone to know - LOCK UP and replace any exterior light bulbs burnt out.

I will be meeting with the sheriffs office this evening to file a report, as it cannot be done over the phone.

Thanks for the post CGCH - this recent spate of crime acivity is disconcerting - we need to re-double our neighborhood efforts to be VIGILANT.

In the mean time, please note this information from the Sheriff's Office Neighborhood Watch Newsletter (July 2009 edition):

Remember a burglary is a crime of opportunity. The best way to combat this crime is by controlling the opportunities.

  • Always ensure your windows and doors are locked if you are leaving your residence. Even a short trip to the store can be enough time for a burglar.
  • Do not hide or store valuable jewelry in normal locations i.e.: Jewelry Boxes/Drawers. Burglarsknow where to look and will head directly to those places.
  • Make the would be burglar work for what they may get. Burglars do not want to spend a lot of time in a home. Store valuables in non-traditional locations and in nontraditional containers.
  • When you leave home look for any suspicious vehicles or persons in your neighborhood. They may be waiting for you to leave. Call and report them immediately.
  • When in doubt let us [the police] figure it out. Make the call, do not approach, and be the best witness you can be.
  • If you go on vacation have a trusted neighbor watch your home and report any suspicious behavior.
